Chapter 9

Chapter Nine

Nick sat there on a park bench a few blocks away from the hotel, with his elbows on his knees and holding his hands together. He kept looking down at the ground, watching people’s feet as they walked by.

He took a deep breath, remembering the looks Jamie gave him in the elevator. They basically said that she wanted nothing to do with him. He kept trying to tell himself that and his brain understood it, but his heart didn’t.

It’s final?!? I’m not getting a fucking abortion!

Nick stood there, leaning against the door, listening to Jamie yell in the living room until she walked up to the door knocking on it. He turned around and opened it, looking at her.

“Nick, I don’t want to have an abortion.” Jamie said, staring at him.

“You’ve got to.” Nick whispered, “It doesn’t matter what you want.”

“What do you want?” Jamie asked, looking at him. “What do you want?”

Nick just stood there looking at her until she glanced down and back up at him.

“Well?” Jamie asked as Nick took a deep breath.

“I want you to get one.” Nick said as he walked out of the room and up the stairs, leaving Jamie standing there in shock.

Nick walked upstairs, and went into his bedroom and slammed the door so hard that two pictures fell down onto the floor. Glass from the frames scattered everything and Nick didn’t even look at it. He sat down on the edge of the bed and put his hands over his face, trying not to cry when he heard Jamie knock on his door lightly.

“What?”

“I’m going home.”

“Don’t tell anybody.”

“I’m not.” Jamie whispered as she looked at the door, wanting to open it, “If -”

“If what?”

“If I have this done. It’s over between us.” Jamie said as Nick closed his eyes and pressed his lips together.

“Yeah, I figured that much.” Nick said as he moved his hands from his face and wiped the tears away, “Just go home.”

“Bye.” Jamie said as she walked away from the door. Nick waited until he knew that she was gone and he broke down in tears.

Nick leaned back on the park bench, looking around, until he finally reached down in his backpack and pulled out his cell phone, dialing a number.

“Hello?”

“Listen, don’t hang up.”

“Alright.” Mike said as he started to laugh, “What?”

“I found her. She’s in my hotel.” Nick said as he closed his eyes, “I went to catch the elevator down and she was in there. She’s on my floor.”

“No shit?” Mike asked laughing, “Well hot damn.”

“She hates me. I can see it in her eyes Mike.”

“And I told you this. Damn, you could have saved a trip to LA man.”

“I think she meant that we could talk later. She was going to a meeting about her script or something and she was nervous.” Nick said, “I was such a asshole.”

“When?”

“When you know -”

“Oh yeah, you were an a asshole man.” Mike said as Nick nodding his head agreeing with him.

“Thanks for that.”

“Anytime.” Mike said, “So are you going to try to talk to her?”

“I’m gonna try.” Nick said, “I had this crazy thought.”

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“No what?” Mike asked as Nick smiled a little looked up the street where the hotel was.

Jamie walked out of the building with a huge smile on her face. The production company bought her script for a good sum of money. It was the first real thing she had ever written. She started writing it when her and Nick were still together, hoping that it would have a happy ending, but when they fell apart, it automatically didn’t have one like she had hoped.

She stood there looking around, smiling when her cell phone rung and she reached in her purse, answering it.

“Hello?”

“Hey.” Mike said as Jamie looked around.

“Hey. Um, listen -”

“No no listen to me.” Mike said, “I just wanted to let you know, that I didn’t tell Nick where you were. He kept asking me, but I would never tell him even though I knew you were in same hotel more than likely because I knew where you were and I know where he always stays when he goes there.”

“You didn’t tell him?”

“No.”

“I can’t handle seeing him right now. Ever since I saw him, I’ve been having all these memories and it’s memories that I’d rather forget.” Jamie said as she looked down at the ground, “And I’m having a great day. I sold my script.”

“You did?” Mike asked, sounding surprised, “Congratulations!”

“Thanks.” Jamie said smiling a little.

“Well I’ll let you go. I just wanted to let you know that I didn’t tell him.”

“I know. I could tell he was surprised when we saw each other.” Jamie said.

“Okay, good luck with Carter.”

“Better wish him good luck because if he sends me over the edge I’ll kill him.” Jamie said as Mike started laughing.

“Bye.” Mike said as Jamie laughed.

“Bye.” Jamie said as she closed her cell phone, and put it back in her purse and at the same time, a cab came up and she opened the door, stepping inside. She told the driver where to and as the car started to drive off, she looked back out the window, smiling a little until she looked down at her stomach and back at the window.

[[ 2000 ]]

“You okay?” Mike asked as Jamie sat there in the passenger seat of his car. She sat there looking out the window and nodded her head no, “Don’t do it then.”

“I have to.” Jamie said as she glanced over at him and back out the window, “He’s making me.”

“And when did you start listening to that ass?” Mike asked as he started to laugh and realized Jamie wasn’t laughing, “Come on. If you don’t want to do it, then don’t do it.”

“I have to.” Jamie whispered as she looked down at her stomach and over at Mike, pressing her lips together, “He told me either I had to listen to him or a lawyer.”

“He’s just scared.” Mike said as he pulled up to the abortion clinic, “You sure you wanna do this?”

“Yeah.” Jamie said as she looked down at her little purse that she had in her lap, “He lied to me all along.”

“About what?”

“How much he loved me and how one day we were going to be together and have a family.” Jamie said, “We didn’t plan on it happening this soon but -”

“It happened.”

“Yeah.” Jamie said as she started to cry a little, “Now, I’m pregnant and he blames me and he wants to kill it.”

“Then don’t do it.” Mike said looking over at her, “He doesn’t own your body and the baby is half yours. It’s your body. You can do whatever you want.”

“I don’t want to have a baby alone.” Jamie said as she looked back down, “I want him to be there and he doesn’t want to.”

“You don’t have to do it.” Mike said as Jamie looked at him and over at the door, opening it.

“Yeah I do.” Jamie said, “I’m gonna go in now.”

“Alright. I’m coming with you.”

Jamie said there, shaking her head a little as she looked down inside of her purse. She reached in, pulling out her little wallet and opened it up to the pictures. She looked at a picture of someone she was related to and then at picture of a little girl, before turning the picture to see a picture of her and Nick. She looked at it and then looked back up, seeing Nick sitting there on the park bench.

“Stop!” Jamie yelled as the driver stopped dead in the middle of the road as she put her wallet back in her purse and looked over at Nick, sitting there with his hands over his face, facing the ground, “Never mind.” She said as the driver continued driving back to the hotel.

“Fuck.” Nick said out loud as he looked up to see a nun walk by him. She looked at him and started to say a prayer. Nick just shook his head wondering what the hell a nun was doing in Beverly Hills anyway. He stood up and looked around, stretching a little as he picked up his backpack, slinging it over his shoulder and began to walk back to the hotel.

He looked over to see a older couple, walking hand in hand and he smiled a little until he looked over to see two men, doing the same thing. He made a disgusting face and shook his head as he looked down, putting his hands in his pockets, thinking.

Knock Knock

“Come in.” Jamie said as her bedroom door opened and Nick peeked in, looking at her, lying there on her bed, “No.”

“Jamie -”

“Nick, no. Get out.” Jamie said, looking at him, “Get out.”

“Listen to me.” Nick said as she stood up, walking up to him.

“It’s over. I told you if I had it done that it was over. The baby’s gone. It’s dead. I’m not pregnant anymore. You don’t have to worry about it or me. It’s all over.” Jamie said looking his dead in the eyes, “I told you when the baby died that we did too and I promise that we are.”

“You don’t mean that.” Nick said as Jamie nodded her head yes, “No you don’t.”

“Yes I do.”

“I love you -”

“No you don’t. If you did you wouldn’t have forced me to do that. You wanted me to kill a part of us.” Jamie said as Nick looked away, over a picture of them on one of her shelves. Jamie noticed what he was looking at and walked over, taking it out of the frame, “You see this picture?”

“Yeah.” Nick said as Jamie stuck it in his face and ripped it in half.

“That’s us. We’re ripped apart. It’s over.” Jamie said as Nick looked away, looking as if he was going to cry, “Don’t cry now. I’ve been crying for the past three days. It’s over. ”

“Okay.” Nick said as he looked down and back up at her, “Just because I wanted you to do that doesn’t mean that I don’t love you.”

“Whatever.” Jamie said as she reached in her pocket and took out a little gold ring that he had given her and handed it to Nick, “Leave.”

“I -”

“Leave! Go! Leave!” Jamie screamed as Nick rolled his eyes and walked back over to her door, turning the knob and walked out, slamming the door behind him.

Nick kept walking, looking at the ground and pressing his lips together until he looked down to see someone’s feet. He looked back up to see Jamie standing there in front of him. They didn’t say anything at first. They just stood there, looking each other in the eyes, trying to read each other’s minds.

“How did your meeting go?”

“Great. I sold the script.”

“Cool.” Nick said as Jamie turned around and walked into the hotel and Nick rushed in, following her. He ran up to her as she got into the elevator and jumped in, before she closed the door on him, “God damn woman.”

“I want to be left alone.” Jamie said as Nick reached over, stopping the elevator.

“No. We need to talk.” Nick said as Jamie looked at him and crossed her arms, looking away.
