Chapter 29

Chapter 29

Two weeks had passed Samantha hadn’t heard from Nick since she hung up on him. She was scared that he was mad at her because he hadn’t even called to talk to even Megan. She was afraid she’d messed things up with him for good this time.

Samantha would go to work but her mind wasn’t on what she was doing. It was on Nick and nothing but him. After work, she would go pick Megan up from daycare, just to go home and sit by the phone, waiting for it to ring, but it never did.

Megan couldn’t understand why Nick didn’t want to talk to her anymore even though Samantha tried to explain to her that Nick was busy, Megan didn’t understand. She wanted to talk to Nick, but couldn’t. Samantha was having a hard time explaining it to her, but she tried her best to do things with Megan like taking her to the park and playing games so that maybe she wouldn’t ask about talking to Nick.

“Sam.. you’ve got a call, about your daughter..” said the radio station’s secretary that afternoon as Samantha put an extra song on. Samantha walked out into the office area as the secretary handed her the phone.

“Hello?” asked Samantha.

“Sam.. it’s Lizzie.. is there anyway you can come and get Megan, I think you should really be with her.” said Lizzie

“What’s wrong?” asked Samantha.

“She’s so upset. Bethany, you know the little red-headed girl, today was her father’s birthday and he was coming to get her early so they could go to the theme park and Megan has been crying ever since saying that she doesn’t have a daddy.” said Lizzie.

“Ohh… alright, I’m coming give me a few and I’m on my way.” said Samantha as she hung up, “Oh April, umm go get Rich and tell him to take over my shift, something’s wrong with Megan, I’ve gotta go.”

“Okay.” said April, the secretary as Samantha grabbed her things and left.

All the way to the daycare, Samantha cried thinking about how Nick was breaking Megan’s heart by not calling her and how she had just fucked up everybody’s life, including Megans because if she hadn’t tried to be so independent, Megan wouldn’t have to cry because she didn’t have both a mother and father like all of the other kids. She didn’t know what to say to Megan when she got there and she didn’t know what to do.

“Uhhh…” Samantha said as she turned the radio on hearing her radio station and Richard coming on taking her place.

“Hey guys it’s Richard.. Samantha had to leave because of an family emergency so I’m taking over until 7, so stay tuned and up next, we have requested Backstreet Boys, and what do you know, it’s Sam’s song…” said Richard as “Rain” started to play and Samantha turned the radio off.

“You son of a bitch… uhhhhh…” said Samantha as she pulled up at the daycare. She got out of her car, and walked in to see Lizzie and Megan sitting upfront.

“Mommy!” yelled Megan, who was crying as Samantha picked her up.

“Hey baby, what’s wrong?” asked Samantha.

“Everybody here has a daddy but me.” said Megan.

“I know, but you’re special because you just have me.” said Samantha.

“I know, but I want a daddy too.” said Megan.

“She said that you told her that her father was mean to both of you and that’s why you left him.” said Lizzie.

“Yeah I did tell her that and she doesn’t have a daddy…. she doesn’t need one.” said Samantha.

“I want a daddy mommy. Ansley has a daddy. Brittany has a daddy. Willie has a daddy…” said Megan as Samantha started to talk.

“Yeah I got the point.” said Samantha.

“I want Nick to be my daddy.” said Megan.

“Who is Nick? She keeps talking about him and I know we haven’t had a chance to talk alot recently.” said Lizzie.

“He’s a street boy just like Uncle AJ and Uncle Howie.” said Megan.

“I think she has them confused with the Backstreet Boys.” said Lizzie laughing.

“Um no… Nick’s a um old friend of mine.” said Samantha, “He um.. he helped me out alot when I left Megan’s father and then we lost touch until October when we met back up by chance.”

“Nick is nice. I want him to be my daddy.” said Megan.

“No baby, he can’t okay. We’ve already been through this.” said Samantha as Megan started to cry, “Listen…” as she put her down and kneeled down to her, “We’ll go home and I will call him and let you talk to him, but he can’t be your daddy unless he wants to.”

“He wants to.” said Megan.

“You don’t know that Meggy….” said Samantha.

“I want him to be.” said Megan who was still crying.

“Uh baby, I know you do okay, so stop crying.. and I promise, we’ll go home and we’ll call Nick okay so you can talk to him.” said Samantha.

“I want him here!” yelled Megan who was getting even more upset, stomping her feet on the floor.

“Megan, he can’t be here baby, he’s over there singing for all those people, rememeber. The people that are on TV screaming for them. He’s over there all away across that ocean outside singing for them.” said Samantha, “So come on..” as she picked her up, “Thanks for calling me Lizzie.”

“You’re welcome… you two drive home safely.. it looks like it’s going to be storming all night tonight.” said Lizzie.

“Okay.. see ya Monday.” said Samantha as she walked outside the day care with Megan as she put her in the backseat in her car seat.

“I want Nick.” said Megan crying.

“I know, alright, I know, but I can’t help ya there…” said Samantha as she layed her head on the steering wheel, “I want him too…”

“Mommy…” said Megan.

“Yeah?” asked Samantha.

“I want to call Nick.” said Megan.

“Okay..” said Samantha as she cranked the car up and drove off.

“Oh my god it’s pouring outside.” said Samantha as her and Megan walked into her house a little bit later.

“Mommy let’s call Nick.” said Megan.

“Uh let me get the jacket off of you before you catch your death.” said Samantha.

“I can’t catch my death. I can’t catch a ball.” said Megan as Samantha started to laugh as she took her jacket off of her.

“Alright, so you want to call Nick.. get on the sofa.” said Samantha as she picked up the phone, pushing her wet bangs out of her eyes and dialed the number.

“I want to talk to him.” said Megan.

“Hang on..” said Samantha as she listened for the dial tone when she heard a operator come on.

“We’re sorry but the party you are trying to call has changed numbers. Sorry for the inconvience.” said the operator as Samantha’s face went blank.

“Mommy, I want to talk to Nick.” said Megan.

“Umm…. I’m sorry baby you can’t, not tonight.” said Samantha.

“Mommy….” said Megan as she started to cry again.

“Um baby I’m sorry… his phone must not be working. You know it’s thundering outside. My phone doesn’t work well when it’s thundering.” said Samantha, “Oh come here..” as she hugged her, “I’m sorry baby.”

“Mommy, I want Nick to be my daddy.” said Megan, “And now he doesn’t want to talk to me.”

“No he doesn’t want to talk to me.” said Samantha.

“Why mommy?” asked Megan.

“I don’t know.” said Samantha, “I’m sorry…” as she started to cry.

“It’s okay Mommy.” said Megan.

“I promise… if Nick doesn’t want to be your daddy.. we’ll go out and find you the best daddy there is okay.” said Samantha.

“I don’t want the best daddy, I want Nick.” said Megan as it started to thunder and lightening really bad outside.

“Come on baby, let’s go upstairs and get some candles and stuff because it’s going to get dark soon.” said Samantha as she picked Megan up and toted her upstairs.

Samantha layed there in bed later that night, listening to the storm outside. She couldn’t sleep. She couldn’t get comfortable in bed and she kept tousing and turning as big flashes of lighting and thunder came from outside when she heard someone beating on the front door, but she didn’t hear a doorbell.

“It’s thunder…” she thought when she opened her eyes, “Damn doorbell is broke..” as she got out of bed in a little t-shirt and walked downstairs, “Damn who the hell is that… probably Ryan.. damn dumbass..” as she walked downstairs and looked out the window not to see anybody but kept hearing someone beat at the door. She opened the door to see Nick standing there, with his head leaned up against the side of the doorpost, soak and wet.

“Nick…” said Samantha as he stood there, rain dripping from his hair, down to his face.

“Hey.” said Nick as he looked up at her.

“Damn.. get out of the rain.” said Samantha as she moved out of the way as Nick walked in, holding a bag and then threw it over by the stairs, “What are you doing here?”

“To see you.” said Nick.

“And…” said Samantha as she looked at him, “It’s damn near freezing and raining outside.. you’re freezing.. you’re soaking wet too.” as she took his jacket off, throwing it over on the floor, “Come over here.. and get warm…” as she walked him over by the fire place which was still on.

“Sam..” said Nick as Samantha looked up at him.

“Yeah?” asked Samantha.

“Sometimes you just have to do what you feel. Fuck thinking, and just do what’s in your heart,” Nick said, as he was looking at her.

“What are you talking about?” she asked him, looking confused.

“I love you…. I never stopped loving you.” said Nick as Samantha smiled.

“I love you too and I really mean it.. I love you.” said Samantha.

“Okay…..” said Nick as he looked around and looked back at her, “This is it… what are we going to do…. are we going to take that leap this time? Because I want to know if I’m coming to you, this is for real. I can’t live through what happened after the earthquake…”

“I want us to be together Nick, I’ve wanted that since the moment I hung up with you the first time…. That was the biggest mistake of my life and I’ve payed for it..” said Samantha, “I love you.. and Megan’s been heartbroken becuase you haven’t called to talk to her… I just didn’t know what to tell her…”

“I just needed some time to think.” said Nick as he looked down.

“Nick.. I know I’m sorry doesn’t cut it for how bad I hurt you, but… I’m really sorry and I want to make that up to you… I want what you wanted.. if you still want that….” said Samantha as Nick looked up at her and didn’t say anything, “Do you?”
