Chapter Twenty - Four - Heartbroken

Okay, first off, there’s no way possible that I can be pregnant.

Me? Having a baby? That would be like J.Lo getting a liposuction. It’s not going to happen. Babies don’t’ like me. Every time I get around one they start screaming and turning red and it irritates the living hell out of me. There’s no way that I can be pregnant. I just can’t be. It’s not possible. I’m supposed to start my period today.

Secondly, I can’t have Nick’s baby. There’s no way. Like, our parents would flip out. He’s my ex-step brother for god’s sake. There’s just no way. I mean, I’m in love with him yes, but I have to get over that fact. He obviously doesn’t feel the same for me or he would have atleast said something by now. He did freak out last night when I left the party after throwing up and he called all over until Maria who was still here at home, told him that I came home. I think he was somewhat disappointed but I couldn’t help it. I could face him.

I just can’t be pregnant. I mean we used protection - a few times. Okay we used it twice I think, god I’m so stupid. I can’t be pregnant. I’m starting my period today. I will sit here and wait for my monthly visitor if I have to.

Why? Because I’m not pregnant. Nope, not at all.

“Miss Melinda,” Maria said as she walked into Melinda’s bedroom that next afternoon, “Why are you not leaving your bed today?”

“I don’t feel good Maria.” Melinda said as Maria walked over beside her bed and put the palm of her hand on Melinda’s forehead.

“You have no fever. What is wrong? You have not left your bed except go to the bathroom.” Maria said, “What is wrong Princess?”

“You haven’t called me Princess since I was like 13.” Melinda said, smiling over at Maria, “I’m scared.”

“What is wrong?” Maria said as she ran back over to Melinda’s door shutting it, and ran back over to her bed as fast as her little legs would go, “You can tell me.”

“Do you promise that you won’t tell anybody?” Melinda asked, looking at Maria as she nodded her head.

“I promise,” Maria said, making a ‘x’ across her chest, “Cross my heart hope to die.”

“Okay.” Melinda said as she looked down at her hands, “I think I’m pregnant.”

“OH!” Maria yelled as Melinda jumped and looked up at her, “Oh!”

“Shh Maria, damn.” Melinda said as she looked around, “I don’t know if I am. I’ve been throwing up and this doctor last night in the ladies room said I sounded like I was and I’m supposed to start today and I haven’t yet.”

“Miss Melinda, have you…” Maria said, drawing out her Spanish accent, “You know….”

“Had sex? Yes Maria, I have.” Melinda said as she looked up at the ceiling and started to cry, “If I am I don’t know what to do.”

“Who would the father be?” Maria asked as Melinda moved her eyes back down to Maria.

“You don’t know him.” Melinda said, “A guy that I met on the tour.”

“Ohhh.” Maria said as she put her hand over her mouth, “Do you want me to go and buy you a test?”

“Would you please?” Melinda asked, “Just don’t let anybody find out. My father would kill me.”

“Yes ma’am.” Maria said as she stood up and clapped her hands, “Oh the baby is having a baby.”

“Ugh.” Melinda said as she layed back in bed, covering her eyes, “Not for sure.”

“I will be back soon Miss Melinda. Rest. You need your rest.” Maria said as she ran out of Melinda’s room, shutting the door behind her.

“Nick!” Jane yelled as she walked into their living room to see Nick laid out on the sofa, watching TV, “You have not left this house or this sofa since you came home. You haven’t even been to your house.”

“Tired.” Nick muttered, watching “The Wedding Planner” on some movie channel.

“You hate this movie. What’s wrong?” Jane asked as Nick looked up at her, “Miss Melinda?”

“Please.” Nick said, rolling his eyes, “I’m just tired.”

“Then why don’t you go home and rest in your own bed.”

“Are you kicking me out?”

“No, I’m just worried. You’ve been here for 4 hours now.” Jane said, “Are you sick?”

“No mom, I’m fine.” Nick said as he sat up on the sofa, and looked at Jane, “Thanks.”

“For what?” Jane asked, looking confused.

“Just thanks.” Nick said as he stood up off of the sofa, “Guess I’ll go to my place now. I’ll come back over later.”, he said as he walked over to the front door and walked out, leaving Jane sitting there confused as hell.

“What is wrong with him?” Jane asked herself as she shook her head.

“Miss Melinda!” Maria said as she walked back into Melinda’s bedroom, seeing her sitting there in bed, “I got one!”

“I haven’t started yet.” Melinda said as Maria walked over, handing Melinda the bag, “What do I do?”

“Well -” Maria said as she took the box out of the bag, “You take the stick out of the box and pee pee on it -”

“I piss on a stick?” Melinda asked, sounding disgusted, “That’ll make me throw up.”

“You pee pee on it and in a few minutes you get your results here you see.” Maria said as Melinda looked down at the box and looked over at her, “Are you scared?”

“Yes, a lot.” Melinda said as she looked back down at the box, “If I am, I’m seriously just in fucking trouble.”

“Go take it and see.” Maria said as Melinda looked back up at her, “You can take it and bring it back in here and we can find out.”

“Thanks.” Melinda said as she reached over, hugging Maria.

“I’m not answering it.” Nick muttered as he laid there on his bed, in his bedroom, watching TV.

“Not gonna do it.”

I can’t come to the phone right now, please leave a message after the beep - BEEP!

“Fucker.”

Yo, Nick Carter answer this damn phone yo -

“Freak.” Nick said as he picked up the phone and put it up to his ear, “What do you want freak?”

“Hello you stupid fuck. Weren’t we supposed to hang out today and go grab lunch?” AJ asked as Nick rolled his eyes.

“Sorry yo, I forgot. I wanted to come home for a few days before we start recording.” Nick said, “Just need a vacation, even if it is two days.”

“What’s up man? I heard the premiere went good last night. I saw pics of you and Melinda, man she was looking -”

“So how are you?” Nick asked, avoiding the subject.

“I’m cool man. What? Don’t wanna talk about Melinda?”

“Nah just you know, that’s all over.”

“That? That what?”

“The tour and shit you know.”

“Oh, for a second I thought that, you know -”

“You’re crazy, naw.” Nick said as he put his left hand over his face, “No.”

“Cool man, I mean if you did, I’d pat ya on the back because damn is she -”

“So watcha doing tonight?” Nick asked as AJ started to laugh.

“Working on this song. It’s nothing but music, but it’s a sweet melody. Maybe you can write some lyrics to it.”

“Cool man, I’ll have to hear it when I get there.” Nick said as he yawned, “I’m so tired.”

“Heartbroken?”

“Tired.”

“Then go to sleep man.”

“I’m on the phone with you.” Nick said as the video for “Review My Kisses” came on MTV, “Ugh, this damn song.”

“What song?”

“My and Mindy’s duet.” Nick said, “I’m tired of it.”

“What is it with Mindy man? You like don’t even wanna talk about her?” AJ asked, “Ya’ll have another one of your hissy fights?”

“Just need a vacation from her. That’s all.”

“Sure, like I believe that.”

“That’s all it is man. I promise.” Nick said as AJ laughed at him.

“Yeah right.”

“Okay.” Melinda said as she walked out of her bathroom, holding the pregnancy stick with the tip of her fingers, “I pissed on it.”

“Okay.” Maria said as Melinda sat it down on top of a paper napkin that was on her dresser, “In three minutes Miss Melinda we’ll find out.”

“I hope I’m not.” Melinda said as Maria looked over at her.

“Was he a one time lover?” Maria asked as Melinda looked at her, confused.

“You mean, a one night stand? No.” Melinda said as she shook her head no, “No, he wasn’t.”

“Would he be happy?”

“I doubt it. He doesn’t really want a kid right now.” Melinda said as she started to cough, “God I feel sick again.”

“Well you can always give it up for adoption or abortion.” Maria said as Melinda looked over at her.

“Yeah I know. I mean I couldn’t adoption. People would see me pregnant unless I go into hiding and I can’t afford that right now with my career taking off again.” Melinda said, “Damn.”

“One and a half minutes.” Maria said as Melinda put her hands over her eyes and went to sit down on the edge of her bed, “Do you know where the father is?”

“I’m not pregnant yet.” Melinda said as she moved her hands and the timer went off, “I don’t think.”

“Well,” Maria said as she looked down at the stick and then at the box it came in, before looking back up at Melinda.

“What?” Melinda asked as she stood up and walked over and looked at the test.

“You are pregnant Miss Melinda.” Maria said as Melinda gasped, putting her hand over her mouth.
