Chapter 6

“Tryin’ to give someone a hint?” asked Nick laughing.

“Of course not, it’s the motor in it… it sucked when my dad got it for me on my 16th birthday.” said Samantha.

“When’s your birthday.. you never told me.” said Nick.

“July 9th.” said Samantha, “When’s yours, Feburary right…”

“January 28th.” said Nick, “Remember that…”

“Why should I?” asked Samantha laughing.

“Never know.. might have to come to a birthday party or somethin’” said Nick.

“Yeah…. well you sound tired, I’m sorry I woke you up.” said Samantha.

“It’s all good.. I was waiting on your call.. you know it’s the one thing I look forward to day after day.” said Nick.

“Oh I’m sure.” said Samantha, “I’ll talk to you tomorrow…. call me okay. I’m going out with Jake but I won’t be out late.”

“Ohh.. Jake.” said Nick laughing, “Alright, I will… bye.”

“Bye.” said Samantha as she hung up and smiled as she started to take her jewerly off and lifted her crown off of her head. She walked over to her vanity where she down, placing it on the glass shelf and looked in the mirror that had pictures of her and Jake as she smiled.

“Wish I had a pic of me and Nick to put up here..” she thought as she took her hair down and it fell down on her shoulders, “Oh well.. there’s plenty of time for that..”

“So what she say?” asked Brian as Nick put his cell phone in his bag beside his bed.

“She won homecoming queen, Jake was king.” said Nick as he layed on his somtach, turning his head over to face Brian.

“You kinda like her don’t ya?” asked Brian, “Don’t lie to me…”

“Yeah.. I thought maybe we could get together in the beginning a little but… now.. she’s all head over heels for him and why shouldn’t she be? He’s there for her 24/7, she can have a normal life, go to FSU, and become a peditrician…” said Nick as Brian looked over at him.

“She’s that smart? And this girl likes to talk to you because….” said Brian as Nick threw a pillow at him.

“Because she can talk to me about things she can’t talk to no one around her about.” said Nick.

“Uh huh…” said Brian as he started to laugh.

Six weeks had passed, and now it was a few days before Christmas. Nick wasn’t ever able to make it home like he had wanted to, but he and Samantha continued to talk everyday on the phone. And although her and Megan were very close, Samantha knew that Nick was truly her best friend because she could tell him things she never would tell Megan. She was totally herself with him.

“C’mon girl, you are walking too slow! How am I supposed to get all of my shopping done with you dragging your ass around?” Samantha barked at Megan, who was reluctantly dragging behind her.

“Samantha , you know I hate the damn mall, just uhh why do you put me through this torture?” Megan asked her.

“Blah, blah, blah, Samantha old story,” Samantha said, as she took out the Christmas list from her pocket, marking off names with her pencil. “Okay, I got my mom and Ryan, so that just leaves Nick and Jake.”

“Oh, Nick and Jake, I see who comes first in that little lineup”, Megan said, grinning at Samantha.

Samantha just rolled her eyes in response. Megan made it a point to keep making comments about her and Nick’s friendship. Samantha just ignored her, knowing she didn’t really mean anything by it, because she knew Megan was a little jealous of their friendship. Because of that, Samantha tried not to talk about Nick too much, she didn’t want to rub it in.

“So what are you getting Jake?” Megan asked as they walked into the sports store.

“Well, I figured pretty much one of everything in here,” Samantha replied, as Megan snorted.

“Jake the jock, well I guess that figures. So what about Nick?” Megan asked, as they were looking through some football jerseys for Jake.

“I have no idea…what do you buy for someone who can afford anything they want?” Samantha asked.

“You’re right,” Megan said, shrugging her shoulders. “And what about your very bestest friend?” she asked.

Samantha looked at her confused thinking that Megan just asked her about Nick, when she realized she was talking about herself. “Oh, you mean you?” Samantha asked, sarcastically.

“Maybe,” Megan replied, smiling. “So?”

Samantha grinned as she picked up a jersey for Megan’s approval. “What do you think of this one?” she asked.

“Yeah yeah, it’s fine. What about that present now?” Megan said, as she took the jersey and brought it to the counter so they could buy it.

Samantha was smiling because she knew that Megan was going to freak out about her Christmas present. Samantha had discovered that Megan was a closet Backstreet Boys fan when she showed up bright and early unexpectantly to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade at Samantha’s house. Megan would never get up early on a day off from school, but there she was, eating donuts and sitting with Samantha on the floor watching the guys on the screen.

“So?” Megan asked again, as they walked out of the store and Samantha took out her list to make a note.

“Oh, just a night out with your dream date…..” Samantha said, as she giggled.

“Who?” Megan asked, as she took a sip of her drink.

“Nick sent us front row tickets to their New Year’s concert in Orlando. So now you can sit front and center and make moony eyes at Brian all night,” Samantha said, as she started to laugh.

“No shit!” Megan squealed loudly, as she dropped her soda and jumped up and down.

“Okay girl, calm yourself,” Samantha said, through her hysterical laughter. “What have you done with my friend Megan, because I don’t recognize this screaming teenager in the mall standing before me!”

Megan linked her arm around Samantha’s. “Have I ever told you that you are the bestest best friend in the whole wide world?” Megan asked.

“Oh girl, you SO have a crush on him don’t ya?” Samantha asked, “I saw you drooling at the television on Thanksgiving, don’t deny it.”

“Well, maybe a little. I can’t believe we got front row seats for the concert! So let’s go and find that Nick a nice big Christmas present to thank him!” Megan said, as they both went to laughing and walked off towards another store.
